Temple Street, Lower

The original name of Hill Street, it was renamed in 1886 at the request of the residents, as it had gained a ‘disreputable character’.

An excerpt from map called ‘An Accurate Survey of the City and Suburbs of Dublin / by Mr. Rocque with Additions, and Improvements ; By Mr. Bernard Scalé'.
Temple Street shown on the Rocque/Scale map of 1773.

The street dates to the 1770s,1 and appears named on the Rocque/Scalé map of 1773.2 The name comes (presumably) from the eponymous property developer.3 M’Cready gives no derivation. I’ve seen suggestions that it was named for George Nugent Temple Grenville (1753–1813), who in 1782 was appointed Lord lieutenant of Ireland, but that’s mistaken.
