Paul Street
Paul Street is named for the Anglican church of Saint Paul, on the grounds of which it was constructed in 1894/95. The church building is extant.
The houses here were developed by the Corporation’s Artisans’ Dwellings Committee, the first plans being approved in 1891.1 The plans were subsequently revised: Paul Street is labeled ‘New Avenue’ on the revised plan.2

It was originally proposed that the rear and interior walls of the houses be constructed in concrete, but wiser heads, including the City Architect and the Army engineers, advised that brick – Tullamore Brick faced with Mount Argos brick – be used instead,
