Annamoe Road
Running from Hanlon’s Corner to Cabra Road, this road was formerly part of Quarry Lane. See the entry for Quarry Road for this.
In 1902 the Corporation received a letter from Mr John Hanlon, North Circular Road, asking that the name be changed to Annamoe Road; he had just built some houses adjoining his own property there.1
The Borough Surveyor reported that there was ‘nothing historical in the present name’ and the Councillors agreed to the change.
There’s no reason given for the new name. ‘Annamoe’ is a river and a village in Wicklow, so maybe there’s a connection there. However, ‘Annamoe’ derives from the Irish ‘Áth na mBó’, meaning ‘ford of the cattle’: is it too fanciful to see the name as a nod to the nearby cattle market, which gave the area its nickname of ‘Cow Town’?
