Killester Abbey

There is a reference to ‘a decayed chapell’ in Killester as far back as 1654, in the Civil Survey,1 and Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary says ‘Killester House, the property of Gen. Luscombe, in which are incorporated the remains of an old abbey‘.2

In the Ordnance Survey Name Books, ‘Killester Abbey’ is described as a ‘two story slated modern house in good repair,’3 and it appears on the OS 6 inch map of 1843.4 It stood where the Killester Park houses are now.

The house was occupied until 1944 when, according to the Irish Times , ‘Mrs and Miss FitzHarding-Wintle left Killester Abbey, Artane, to move to Ballygath Castle, Juilianstown‘.5
