Fingal Place, Stonnybatter, was built in 1900/01. The street was named, on the recommendation of the City Surveyor, by the Corporation on 1 April 1901.1
The name presumably derives from the area being associated with the Vikings, ‘Fingal’, or ‘Fine Gall’, meaning ‘fair strangers’. (See, for example, Olaf Road.)
The street was taken in charge in September 1902, after the builder, Mr Grimes, lodged £25 to the Corporation for the laying of 45 yards of paving.2
No longer in existence, Waterford Street was the last name given to the street running from Marlborough Street to Gardiner Street. See the entry for Railway Street for the history.
