Dublin Street Names Dated and Explained

Citation format: M’Cready, [page].

Rev’d C.T. M’Cready, Dublin street names : dated and explained (Dublin, 1892).

Published in 1892, Reverend Christopher Teeling M’Cready’s book was the first attempt to ‘date and explain’ the names of the streets of the City.

M’Cready issn’t consistent in his ‘explanation’; for many entries he gives an explanation, but for others he just gives the street name and (not always) a date.

M’Cready lists sixteen sources, two of which were the first two volumes of the Calendar of Ancient Records of the City of Dublin (CARD), edited by Sir John T. Gilbert. The second volume ends at 1610, and so M’Cready didn’t have access to one of the main sources for the following years.

I refer to M’Cready a lot, but where I have later or different sources, I cite them.
